In our experience in pediatric hospice we have found that the life and death experiences for each child and family are unique and because of that, what we offer to each family is based on their individualized needs.
Helping families cope with grief is a major focus of our hospice program. Follow-up is 24 months and age-specific activities are designed to help the children cope with their many feelings as well as remember their loved ones.
The Stepping Stones Program provides parents assistance in determining how to best inform their children about an illness, guidance in funeral preparation for children, and materials to meet each family's specific needs. A bereavement specialist is on staff to help children work through their grief by participating in meaningful, age-specific, memory and feeling activities before and after the death of their loved one.
WINGS developed a special program designed for families with unborn infants who are expected to have a life-threatening condition or illness at birth. The WINGS Team will help the family formulate a personalized care plan that addresses the family goals during pregnancy and delivery as well as the time following the baby's birth. The WINGS team will be able to offer guidance and caring support to assist parents in both welcoming the baby and, if necessary, saying "good-bye".
